Hockey In The South: The Birmingham Bulls

Published: December 5, 2023

While football and baseball may dominate the sports landscape here in the south, Shelby County’s own local hockey team, the Birmingham Bulls, should not be counted out. After a stellar 2022 season, the Bulls have some unfinished business on the ice this year. If you’re looking for family activities in Shelby County, hockey games are the perfect option. Read along to get the latest scoop on the pride of Pelham, the Birmingham Bulls.

Hockey in the South: The Birmingham Bulls

After a historic season in 2022-2023, the Birmingham Bulls are hoping for another shot at the title this year. Last year, the Bulls reached the SPHL President’s Cup finals for the second time in franchise history. And although they came up short to the Roanoke Rail Yard Dogs, the Bulls are only looking forward and working hard to come out on top this season. The team has many veterans, players and coaches alike, returning to duke it out on the ice for the Bulls this year, and spirits are high that this will be our year.

Veterans Returning This Year

Luckily for fans and players alike, veteran coaches Craig Simchuk and Kevin Curr are returning to lead the Bulls this season. Following last year’s stellar performance which gained him an award for SPHL coach of the year, Simchuk will lead the team as head coach, while Kevin Curr will round out the team by acting as Associate Head Coach and director of player development.

The coaching duo hopes to bring back the same level of excitement this year as the Bulls enjoyed last season. Recruitment has been a top priority, and the success on the ice has led Simchuk and Curr to enjoy immense success in recruiting players from across the nation and the world. The strong player base that the Bulls already have coupled with the exciting start for some new faces means that you won’t want to miss this season.

Big Expectations

Last season, the Bulls went all the way to the President’s Cup. Although they came up short, players and coaches for the Bulls are optimistic that they are up to the challenge of making it all the way this time around. The team has been focusing on small mistakes that kept them from the title last year and hopes new-found team chemistry and new faces of players and staff will be invigorating this season. One thing is certain, however: the fans made all the difference in 2022.

Players and coaches expect to see the same levels of attendance that the team saw last year. The packed house each game ensured that the Bulls could take advantage of their home rink and come out on top with the crowd behind them. So next time you’re making plans with your family or friends, lend a hand to the Birmingham Bulls! Come out, get loud, and show the Bulls’ opponents that we care about our Shelby County Hockey team!

Great Home Schedule

Beginning in late October, the Bulls will host opponents in a home game nearly once a week. This means there are plenty of opportunities to get out and show your support! Even better, a vast majority of the Bulls’ games take place on Friday and Saturday evenings which means you can kick off your weekend right watching Shelby County’s squad duke it out on the ice, or you can spend a day in Pelham getting ready to root for the home team!

Just be sure you get your tickets early. Birmingham Bulls Hockey games are attended by thousands of fans each game, meaning if you don’t get your tickets early, you may miss your chance to cheer the team on in person for that game!

Keep An Eye out for Promotions!

One way the Bulls separate themselves from other sports teams is in their promotions. Not only are there ticket promotions on the team’s social media pages, but keep an eye out for giveaways and specials on the team’s website as well. You may even be able to secure your very own Birmingham Bulls replica jersey, just by showing up at the game!

Didn’t win the giveaway but still want to sport Bulls swag? Check out the fan store on the team website. There you can find apparel, accessories, and swag for all ages. Make sure next time you and your family get out to support the pride of Shelby County, you look the part. Go get some Bulls gear today!

Go Bulls!

Shelby County’s group of warriors on the ice give us plenty to cheer about. Hopefully, the trends in excellent playing we saw last year will continue. However, one thing is certain; the Bulls need the fans’ support too! So this season, let’s show the rest of the league how Shelby County supports their own. Go ahead and get your tickets now so you don’t miss a single goal this season. Discover Shelby says Go Bulls!
